Japanoise 2 (2014)
Iron, height 120cm
"Japanoise (ジャパノイズ) can be read as a portmanteau of "Japanese" and "Noise." In English, this is a blend word formed from "Japanese" and noise (as in a soundscape or background noise). It also echoes the phrase "à la japonaise," meaning in the Japanese style or under Japanese influence. Japanoise is a term used to describe Japan’s diverse and influential musical noise scene. While this artistic movement reached its peak in the 1980s and 1990s, it remains active and multifaceted today.
The harsh sounds emitted during the sculpture's fabrication process—the cutting apart and fusing back together of forms—intertwine with the experience of musical jamming, which can similarly be loud and driven by the spontaneity of the moment."
